Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: brain fever n., bird n.
Etymology: < brain fever n. + bird n., with reference to the supposed effect of the bird's repetitive call on the listener.
Either of two cuckoos of the genus Cuculus having incessant repetitive calls: the common hawk-cuckoo of South Asia, C. varius, and (in later use) the pallid cuckoo, C. pallidus, of Australasia.
