单词 mensa
释义

mensan.

Brit. /ˈmɛnsə/, U.S. /ˈmɛnsə/
Forms:

α. 1600s– mensa.

β. (In sense 2, in Latin genitive form) 1800s– Mensae Brit. /ˈmɛnsʌɪ/, /ˈmɛnsiː/, U.S. /ˈmɛnsaɪ/, /ˈmɛnˌsi/.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mēnsa.
Etymology: < classical Latin mēnsa table (1679 in post-classical Latin in sense 1 in the passage translated in quot. 1684 at sense 1, 6th cent. in sense 3), of uncertain origin (see note). In sense 2 adopted as a shorter alternative to Mons Mensae n. Sense 4 appears to have arisen from a sense of the organization as a ‘round table’ (see Round Table n. 5), perhaps with a pun on classical Latin mēns mind (see mental adj.1).The original sense of classical Latin mēnsa is thought to have been ‘flat loaf on which offerings are placed’ (compare Umbrian mefa ). A derivation frommētīrī to measure (see measure n.) has been proposed, but is by no means certain. The Latin word was earlier borrowed into Old English as mēse (also mēose , mīse , mȳse ) table, what is placed on a table. The use of the Latin genitive case form as postmodifier in star names (see sense 2) is a practice that originated in post-classical Latin.
