Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sub- prefix, sense n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + sense n. In sense 1 after ancient Greek ὑπόνοια (see hyponoia n. at hypo- prefix 2).
1. A hidden or underlying meaning. Cf. hyponoia n. at hypo- prefix 2. Now rare.
