Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Metol.
Etymology: < German Metol (1893: see quot. 18931), probably < the initial and terminal elements of the chemical name methylparamidometacresol.
Photography.
The sulphate of 4-methylaminophenol, (CH3NH)C6H4OH.H2SO4, a soluble white crystalline solid that is used chiefly as a photographic developer.

1893 Photogr. Ann. 90 Metol, according to the statement of the maker (Hauff, of Feuerbach), is the sulphate of methylparamidometacresol. It is a white powder, soluble in water.
