单词 sub-cheese
释义

sub-cheesen.

Brit. /sʌbˈtʃiːz/, U.S. /ˌsəbˈtʃiz/
Forms: 1800s– sub-cheese, 1800s– sub-cheeze, 1800s– sub-chiz (now rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi sab cīz.
Etymology: < Hindi sab cīz < sab all, every ( < Sanskrit sarva all, whole: see safe adj.) + Urdu cīz thing, object (see cheese n.2). With the spellings of the second element compare cheese n.2; the spelling of the first element may reflect folk-etymological identification with sub- prefix.
Military slang (originally Anglo-Indian). Now archaic and historical.
Everything, the whole amount; all that there is. Chiefly in the whole sub-cheese.
