1900 Lancet 7 July 7/2 The cell-body, traced from the cuticular end, begins as a distinct granular protoplasmic swelling, called the myoid.
1915 Jrnl. Compar. Neurol. 25 539 Later, in 1890, Angelucci borrowed the term ‘myoid’ which Engelmann had given to the contractile portion of the cone's inner member and applied it to the corresponding part of the rod.
1915 Science 24 Dec. 916/2 The so-called ‘myoid’ of the cone-visual cell shortens to a marked degree when..the retina is exposed to light.
1942 G. L. Walls Vertebr. Eye iii. 56 The myoid may be quite non-contractile and thus undeserving of the name, as in man.
1961 S. Duke-Elder Syst. Ophthalmol. II. iii. 241 In man and other mammals the inner segment of the rod is an elongated slightly barrel-shaped structure..made up of two elements, an outer ellipsoid and an inner myoid.
1972 Vision Res. 12 1841 The myoid is a cylindrical part of the photoreceptor connecting the region of the cell containing its nucleus with the region containing the ellipsoid.
1989 Encycl. Brit. XXVII. 148/2 The rod myoids (contractile elements) are contracted in darkness so that the rod outer segments are withdrawn from the pigment and exposed fully to the available light.
1997 Proc. National Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 94 4732/1 In bovine retina, the inner segments of rod cells and the myoids of some cone cells were labeled.
