Modern name of inosite n.: any of the nine stereoisomers of hexahydroxycyclohexane, (CHOH)₆; spec. that isomer (also called meso-inositol or myoinositol) which is a member of the vitamin B complex, occurs in many animal organs esp. muscle and (often as its hexaphosphate) in plant leaves and seeds, and promotes the growth of bacteria and yeasts.
