单词 springle
释义

springlen.1

Brit. /ˈsprɪŋɡl/, U.S. /ˈsprɪŋɡ(ə)l/
Forms: 1600s 1800s springal (English regional (Devon)), 1600s– springle.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: spring n.3, -le suffix 1; spring n.1, -le suffix 1.
Etymology: Probably < spring n.3 + -le suffix 1, or perhaps < spring n.1 (compare spring n.1 23) + -le suffix 1, on account of the pliant wooden sticks or rods used to construct the snare. Compare earlier springe n. and the Old English evidence discussed at that entry.
Chiefly English regional (south-western) and Welsh English (south-western). Now rare.
A snare used to catch birds or other small game, consisting of a flexible switch attached to a noose in which the animal is caught when the trap is sprung (cf. springe n. 1). Also figurative.
