Etymology: < restoration n. + -ism suffix. Compare earlier restorationist n., restorationist adj.
1. Theology. Also with capital initial. The doctrine that all human beings will ultimately be restored to a state of happiness in the future life. Cf. restoration n. 1b(b).Distinguished from other forms of universalism by the teaching that punishment in the future life is temporary and for the purpose of reform and purification.
