Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Socinianus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Socinianus (1614 or earlier as noun, 1643 or earlier as adjective) < Socinus , Latininized form of the surname of Laelius and Faustus Socinus (Italian Lelio and Fausto Socini , also Soccini , Sozini , Sozzini ), two Italian theologians of the 16th cent. (see note at Socinianism n.) + classical Latin -ānus -an suffix. Compare French socinien (1637, as noun), Italian sociniano (1745).
Theology. Now chiefly historical.
