单词 semite
释义

Semiten.adj.

Brit. /ˈsiːmʌɪt/, /ˈsɛmʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈsɛˌmaɪt/
Forms: 1500s Semit, 1500s– Semite.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Sem , Shem , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Sem, variant (now archaic) of the name of Shem, one of the sons of Noah (post-classical Latin Sem (Vulgate), Hellenistic Greek Σήμ (Septuagint); for the Hebrew form of the name, see Shemite n. and adj.) + -ite suffix1. Compare Shemite n., which reflects the now usual form of the name in English.Compare German Semit (1571 or earlier; late 19th cent. in anti-Semitic discourse in the sense ‘Jew’), post-classical Latin Semita (1608), French sémite , noun and adjective (1845). Specific senses. With sense A. 2 compare slightly earlier anti-Semite adj. and n. In quot. 1881 after German Semit in its specific sense ‘Jew’, with reference to the Anti-Semiten-Liga , an organization founded c1879. With use as adjective compare earlier Semitic adj., Shemite adj., Shemitic adj. The name of Shem. The name of Shem is attested in English contexts in biblical translations and references from the Old English period onwards. The usual form of the name in Old English and Middle English and in early modern English up to the early 17th cent. is Sem; this is the form used by Tyndale and Coverdale, and by the Great Bible (1540) and the Rheims Douai Bible (1610). The form Shem (after the Hebrew) first appears in the Geneva Bible (1560); the original King James Bible (1611) uses Sem up to Genesis 9 and Shem thereafter (standardized to Shem throughout in the edition of 1629).
