单词 religieuse
释义

religieusen.

Brit. /rəlɪʒɪˈəːz/, U.S. /rəˌlɪʒiˈəz/, /rəˌlɪʒiˈuz/
Inflections: Plural religieuses, (rare) unchanged.
Forms: 1600s– religieuse, 1700s religieux (plural, irregular).
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French religieuse.
Etymology: < French religieuse (noun): see religious adj. Compare earlier religieux n., and also religious n. 2 and discussion at that entry. In sense 2 after French religieuse (1904 in this sense), apparently a specific use of religieuse nun, the pastry being so called on account of its resemblance to a nun wearing a habit, the dark icing contrasting with the white whipped cream; the phrase gâteau religieuse (compare quot. 1929) is apparently not attested in French. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (rəliʒyōz) /rəliʒjæz/.
