Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin religātiōn- , religātiō ; re- prefix, ligation n.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin religātiōn-, religātiō action of tying up or making fast < religāt- , past participial stem of religāre religate v. + -iō -ion suffix1; compare -ation suffix. In later use independently < re- prefix + ligation n.; compare religate v.
1. The action of binding together again (literal and figurative); the fact of being bound or constrained. Cf. religate v. 3.Chiefly in religious contexts, with reference to the etymology of religion n.
