Etymology: < sea n. + eagle n.With sense 1 compare classical Latin haliāetus , ancient Greek ἁλιάετος aliet n., post-classical Latin aquila marina (1575), Middle French, French aigle de mer (1564). With sense 2 compare ancient Greek ἀετός eagle ray (extended use of ἀετός eagle), post-classical Latin aquila marina (1572), French aigle (1791), aigle de mer (1898); for the motivation of the name see quot. 1847 at sense 2. Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈsea-ˌeagle.
1. An eagle of the genus Haliaëtus, esp. the White-tailed Eagle, H. albicilla, which older writers confounded with the Osprey or so-called Fishing Eagle. Also a name for the frigate-bird and the skua-gull.Pennant, Brit. Zool. (1766) 140, refers to Sibbald as having applied this name to the Skua.
