In some places the rupee was formerly equivalent to 64 paise; decimalization occurred in Sri Lanka in 1872, India in 1957, and in Pakistan in 1961. The rupee was also formerly used as the principal monetary unit in various other countries, including Afghanistan until 1925, Bhutan until 1974, and the Maldives until 1981.
