Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: fluor n.1, -oid suffix.
Etymology: < fluor n.1 + -oid suffix, after German Fluoroid ( W. Haidinger Handb. der bestimmenden Mineral. (1845) 37); so called because the form is commonly shown by crystals of fluorite.
Crystallography. Now rare.
