Etymology: < fluoro- comb. form + -scope comb. form. In sense 1 after German †Fluorescop (G. Kerner 1869, in Pflügers Archiv f. die gesammte Physiol. 2 232; 1873 or earlier as †Fluoroscop, in a report on Kerner's 1869 paper).
1. A device that uses a Geissler tube for measuring the fluorescence of a solution. Now rare.

Fluoroscopes are widely used in medicine to obtain real-time images of the body, thus aiding diagnosis and treatment.
