A form of divination in which the first line seen upon opening a book, originally of poetry, at random is taken to be prophetic. Cf. sortes Virgilianae at sortes n.

1793 T. Wilson Archæol. Dict. (ed. 2) Rhapsodomancy, a species of divination performed by the Ancients with the works of Rhapsodists, or poets.
1897 Jrnl. Amer. Folklore 10 313 Belcher's Biography of George Whitefield gives an interesting case of sortilege practised by the Rev. John Wesley, of the variety known as rhapsodomancy.
1931 G. Laing Survivals Rom. Relig. xxvi. 184 Another way of reading the future was divination by books (rhapsodomancy). One would open a book at hazard and the first line the eye lighted on was regarded as an oracle.
1997 G. Dunwich Everyday Wicca vii. 121 Rhapsodomancy is a form of bibliomancy (the art and practice of divination by books) and is believed to have originated in Greece and Rome.
