Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pōmerīdiānus, postmerīdiānus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pōmerīdiānus, variant of postmerīdiānus postmeridian adj. Compare Italian pomeridiano (1598). Compare later postmeridian adj.In sense 2 probably after scientific Latin pomeridianus, specific epithet (1766 or earlier). With sense 3 compare scientific Latin Lepidoptera Pomeridiana, former subdivision name ( J. F. Stephens Illustr. Brit. Entomol.: Haustellata (1829) II 2).
1. literary. Of or relating to the hours after midday; belonging to the afternoon. Frequently (and in earliest use) poetic as postmodifier. Cf. postmeridian adj. Occasionally also as n.: = postmeridian n. Now rare.
