Compare Afrikaans pomelo grapefruit, pomelo.An alternative explanation as an alteration of a compound of pome n.¹ and melon n.¹ (or their respective cognates) has also been suggested, but such a compound is apparently unattested. Such forms as pomello, pomolo do seem likely to have been influenced by pome n.¹ or its cognates.

A very large citrus fruit (also called shaddock), the fruit of Citrus maxima, which has a thick loose rind and coarse dry pulp and is an ancestor of the grapefruit ( C. paradisi); esp. a smaller variety of this (cf. pampelmoes n.).
