Etymology: Probably an alteration of pome n.¹, perhaps originally due to the reanalysis of an irregular plural form. Compare later pommé adj.Compare also, however, Anglo-Norman pomel pommel n.¹ in the sense ‘roundel’ (1334 in this sense, although there is no clear evidence that this was applied specifically to green roundels); pomel has a variant pomeys (plural; 13th cent. or earlier), although this is apparently not attested in the heraldic sense.
