单词 refraidour
释义

refraidourn.

Forms: late Middle English refraidour, late Middle English refraydeur, late Middle English refreidure.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: refreid v., -our suffix; refreid v., -ure suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < refreid v. + -our suffix, and partly < refreid v. + -ure suffix1, probably after Anglo-Norman fraidure, freidure, freideure cold temperature (first half of the 12th cent.), coldness, chill (c1200), cold, catarrh (13th cent. or earlier) and Anglo-Norman fraidur, freidour, freidur, freydur coldness, chill (early 12th cent., originally in figurative use as a symptom of fright), cooling, refreshment (both 13th cent. or earlier). The Romance nouns represent two different morphological types, formed with the suffixes corresponding to -our suffix and -ure suffix1 respectively, but merged in Anglo-Norman due to regular phonological developments. With Anglo-Norman fraidure , etc., compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French froidure (12th cent. in Old French), and also Old Occitan freidura , frejura . With Anglo-Norman fraidur , etc., compare Middle French, French froideur (12th cent. in Old French as froidor , froidour ), and also Old Occitan freidor , frejor , Catalan fredor (14th cent.), Italian †freddore (second half of the 13th cent.; probably < Old Occitan), all in senses ‘coldness’, ‘cold, chill’. Compare slightly later refroidour n. and the French noun cited at that entry.
