Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish rubio.
Etymology: < Spanish rubio (although this is apparently first attested later in this sense: 1910 or earlier), use as noun (short for mineral rubio : 1879 or earlier) of rubio fair, blonde, golden (10th cent.) < classical Latin rubeus red (see rubeola n.). The mineral is so named on account of its colour.
