Etymology: < classical Latin rubr-, ruber red (see rubro- comb. form) + -al suffix¹. Compare scientific Latin retico-rubralis, in same sense (1909 or earlier in a German context), and perhaps also scientific Latin rubralis (1789 as a specific epithet; rare before late 20th cent.).

Anatomy and Physiology.

Of or relating to the red nucleus (nucleus ruber) of the brain.
