单词 rubisco
释义

Rubiscon.

Brit. /ruːˈbɪskəʊ/, /rᵿˈbɪskəʊ/, U.S. /ruˈbɪskoʊ/
Forms: 1900s– Rubisco, 1900s– RuBisCO, 1900s– rubisco.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ribulose n., English bisphosphate , carboxylase n., oxygenase n.
Etymology: < ru (representing ribulose n.) + bis- (in bisphosphate ( < bis- comb. form1 + phosphate n.)) + c (representing carboxylase n.) + o (representing oxygenase n.).‘I coined the acronym at the UCLA banquet honoring the retirement of Prof. Sam Wildman the discoverer of RuBisCO. Wildman planned a company to produce edible protein, consisting of this purified enzyme from tobacco leaves. I joked that he should formulate the protein as biscuits, which he would call RuBisCos... When I used the term in my 1980 article..the journal referee said the name was unsuitable for a protein, and should be deleted from the paper. I tried to comply, but left it in the running title, which needed to be shortened... It was immediately picked up by all researchers in the field.’—Prof. David Eisenberg (one of the co-authors of the paper cited in quot. 1980), May 2010 (O.E.D. Archives).
Biochemistry.
