Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps (although the β. forms are first attested later than the α. forms) < an unattested variant (with short vowel) of rote n.1 + rhyme n.; with the α. forms compare e.g. rat n.5 Compare earlier rat-rane n. and later rat n.6In form rat-rythm apparently altered after rhythm n.
Scottish and English regional (northern). Now rare.
