Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek περιηγητής.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek περιηγητής guide, author of geographical descriptions < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + ἡγητής guide ( < ἡγεῖσθαι to lead (see hegumen n.) + -τής , suffix forming agent nouns; compare exegete n.), after περιηγεῖσθαι to lead round. Compare earlier periegesis n. and periegetic adj.
A writer of geographical descriptions or guidebooks.

1903 R. B. Richardson Vacation Days in Greece 153 Pausanias for once drops his rôle of periegete to become the historian of a gallant race.
1927 F. P. Johnson Lysippos v. 96 Though only a few of the places mentioned by the periegete can be definitely located, his general route is pretty clear.
