Etymology: < Rascia (post-classical Latin Rascia, Serbian Raška), the name of a major administrative district (Serbian župa) in the medieval Serbian kingdom, now often understood to be synonymous with Serbia and as the ultimate origin of the modern state + -an suffix. Compare post-classical Latin Rascianus (1618 or earlier), Italian †rasciano (a1433).
