Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: poly- comb. form, Greek γυνή , -y suffix3.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ancient Greek γυνή woman, wife (see -gynous comb. form) + -y suffix3. Compare Hellenistic Greek πολυγύνης having many wives. Compare earlier polyandry n., and later monogyny n.
1. A form of polygamy in which a man has more than one wife at the same time. Cf. polyandry n. 1a.
