Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ancient Greek γυνή woman, female (see -gynous comb. form), after French polygyne (c1817 as noun (C. Fourier Nouveau monde amoureux in Théorie des quatre mouvements (1967) 252/2); 1926 or earlier as adjective in entomological sense; earlier as adjective in botanical sense ‘having more than one pistil, style, or stigma’ (1787)).
