Etymology: Originally < scientific Latin Polygynia, order name ( Linnaeus Hortus Uplandicus (1730)), denoting an order of plants having many pistils ( < poly- poly- comb. form + ancient Greek γυνή woman, wife (see -gynous comb. form), taken by Linnaeus in sense ‘female organ, pistil’ + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1. Compare Monogynia n. In sense 2 an alteration of polygyny n.: the spelling polygunia reflects the transliteration of Greek υ (upsilon) as u . Compare polyandria n.
