Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek Ῥαμέσσης Ramesses, the name of eleven Egyptian Pharaohs of this family (especially Ramesses I, founder of the 19th dynasty, and Ramesses II: see note at definition; Egyptian r‘-ms-sw ) + -id suffix³, probably after either German Ramessiden, plural noun (1844 in the passage translated in quot. 1854 at sense A.) or French Ramesside, noun (although this is apparently first attested later: 1864 or earlier).
