Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a German lexical item or on a French lexical item. Etymons: proper name Ῥαμέσσης , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek Ῥαμέσσης Ramesses, the name of eleven Egyptian Pharaohs of this family (especially Ramesses I, founder of the 19th dynasty, and Ramesses II: see note at definition; Egyptian r‘-ms-sw ) + -id suffix3, probably after either German Ramessiden, plural noun (1844 in the passage translated in quot. 1854 at sense A.) or French Ramesside, noun (although this is apparently first attested later: 1864 or earlier).

A member of the Egyptian royal family during the 19th and 20th dynasties (13th to 11th centuries b.c.).The most famous ruler of this family was Ramesses II (also known as Ramesses the Great), the third Egyptian pharaoh of the 19th dynasty, who ruled for 66 years (from 1279 b.c. to 1213 b.c.).
