Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: rambarre v., ramforce v., an element of uncertain origin, English -och.

Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < ram- (in rambarre v., ramforce v., etc.), reanalysed as < ram v.¹ and used as an intensifying prefix + a second element of uncertain origin (perhaps ganch v.; but compare also glunch v.) + -och, intensifying suffix.With use of ram- as an intensifying prefix perhaps compare German regional (Low German) ramm- in rammdösig dull-witted, stupid, rammschnutig loud-mouthed. Sc. National Dict. (at cited word) records the word as still in use in Wigtownshire in 1967.
