Etymology: < classical Latin quaestūra rank and office of a quaestor, quaestorship < quaest- (in quaestor quaestor n.) + -ūra -ure suffix1, by analogy with e.g. cēnsūra censure n. beside cēnsor censor n. Compare (both < classical Latin) French questure (1574 in Middle French in this sense), Italian questura (17th cent. in this sense, 1871 in sense ‘police station or headquarters’; > Questura n.). Compare earlier quaestorship n.
