Etymology: < scientific Latin Discophora (1829 in form Discophorae denoting an order of cnidarians: J. F. Eschscholtz System der Acalephen p. v; 1851 denoting an order of annelid worms: A. E. Grube Die Familien der Anneliden 28; < ancient Greek δίσκος disc n. + -ϕορος -phore comb. form + scientific Latin -a -a suffix2) + -an suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek δισκοϕόρος that holds the discus, post-classical Latin discophorus waiter (late 4th cent. in Jerome), scientific Latin discophorus , as specific name (1819 or earlier). Compare earlier discophorous adj.

A member of the (former) cnidarian order (or subclass) Discophora, comprising the jellyfishes; = discophore n. Now disused.The group (also called Discophorae or Discophori) originally included both hydrozoan and scyphozoan jellyfishes, but was later variously restricted, generally to the latter.
