Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: disco- comb. form, -phorous comb. form.
Etymology: < disco- comb. form + -phorous comb. form. In senses 1 and 2 after either scientific Latin Discophora or Discophorae (for both, see Discophoran n. and adj.).
1. Zoology.
a. Of or relating to the (former) cnidarian subclass Discophora of jellyfishes, characterized by a convex swimming bell or disc; (in later use) spec. scyphozoan (see scyphozoan n. and adj.). Now rare or disused.
