Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pulmō.
Etymology: < classical Latin pulmō lung, lungs, either < an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of ancient Greek πλεύμων (see pneumono- comb. form), or borrowed < the ancient Greek word. Compare Anglo-Norman pulmon, pulmun, pomon, pumun, etc., Old French, Middle French, French poumon (c1100 in Old French as pulmun), Old Occitan polmon (end of the 12th cent.; also pulmon; Occitan palmon, paumon), Catalan pulmó (end of the 13th cent. as polmó), Spanish pulmón (c1250), Portuguese pulmão (14th cent. as †polmões, plural), Italian polmone (a1306).
Obsolete. rare.
