Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Mononeura , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mononeura, former group name (see below; < mono- mono- comb. form + ancient Greek νεῦρον (see neuro- comb. form) + -a -a suffix2) + -an suffix.Brande attributes the term to C. A. Rudolphi, but it has not been located among the many related terms coined in his works. In Beyträge zur Anthropologie u. allgemeinen Naturgeschichte (1812) ii. 97-8, he uses the terms Haploneura and German Einfachnervige for a group including the insects.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
An animal of the former group Mononeura, comprising invertebrates with a nervous system based on a series of linked ganglia.

1842 W. T. Brande Dict. Sci., Lit. & Art 767/1 Mononeurans, a term applied by Rudolphi to the series or primary division comprehending the animals which he believed to have only the ganglionic system of nerves, as the Mollusks and Insects.
