Etymology: < French monomyaire ( Lamarck Hist. nat. des animaux sans vertèbres (1818) V. 423; < mono- mono- comb. form + ancient Greek μῦς (see myo- comb. form) + French -aire -ary suffix1): see -ary suffix1. Compare dimyary adj. and n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mǫnoməi·ări) /mɒnəʊˈmaɪərɪ/.
