Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Prževal′skij.
Etymology: < the name of Nikolaj Mixajlovič Prževal′skij (1839–88; usually transliterated Przewalski: see note), Russian explorer, who collected an animal of this species in 1876 (named by I. S. Poljakov 1881, in Izvestija Imper. Russ. Geogr. Obščestva 17 1).The spelling Przewalski, which has become established in English, represents either the Polish form of the name (the explorer studied in Warsaw), or perhaps a former transliteration system for Russian.

Designating a stocky wild Mongolian horse, Equus ferus (or E. przewalskii) with a dun-coloured coat and a dark brown erect mane, which is regarded as the only true wild horse and the ancestor of the domestic horse. Chiefly in Przewalski's horse.Przewalski's horse is now extinct in the wild, though zoo-bred animals have recently been returned to the Mongolian steppe. It is sometimes regarded as a subspecies of the domestic horse, E. caballus.
