Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Abitur.
Etymology: < German Abitur (1897), shortened < Abiturium (1881; now rare; compare earlier Abiturientenexamen : see Abiturient n.) < post-classical Latin abiturire (see Abiturient n.) + German -um, after Latin nouns in -um.
In Germany: the set of examinations taken in the final year of secondary school, forming part of the entrance requirements for universities.
