Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pteroma.
Etymology: < classical Latin pteroma colonnade of a temple (Vitruvius), in post-classical Latin also in sense 2 (in plural pteromata : J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 174) < ancient Greek πτέρωμα plumage < πτερόν feather, wing (see ptero- comb. form), in Hellenistic Greek also side wall of a temple + -μα (see -oma comb. form). Compare French ptérome (1869 in Littré in sense 2, 1875 in sense 1).With the form pterome compare -ome comb. form.

2. Ornithology. In form pterome. In a bird's wing: each of the coverts of the secondary flight feathers. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
