Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French quatrain, quadrain, quadrin.
Etymology: < Middle French, French quatrain, †quadrain, †quadrin stanza of four lines (1543), group of four people (1785; compare earlier quatraine group of four soldiers (1688)) < quatre quatre n. + -ain , suffix forming nouns from numerals (probably < classical Latin -ēnī , suffix forming distributive adjectives: see nonagenarian n. and adj.).The French forms quadrain , quadrin (compare the α. forms) are after classical Latin quadri- quadri- comb. form. With the ending of Middle French quadrin compare -in -ine suffix1. With sense 2 compare quartern n.2 7.
