Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pro- prefix1, form n.
Etymology: < pro- prefix1 + form n.In quot. 1959 substituted for the term pro-morpheme introduced by Z. Harris (see pro-morpheme n. at pro- prefix1 2a(c)) because certain items of this kind used in the author's description of Mazatec are not strictly morphemes.
Linguistics.
A morpheme, word, lexical unit, or other clause constituent which concisely refers to and is used in place of a more specific expression occurring or implied elsewhere in the discourse.
