Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French affronté.
Etymology: < French affronté (of two figures) facing one another, face-to-face (1st half of the 17th cent. or earlier in heraldry), use as adjective of the past participle of affronter affront v. Compare affronted adj. 3.In sense 2 interpreted as ‘facing the front’ (compare front v.1 2). N.E.D. (1884) also gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (afroṅte) /afrɔ̃te/.
Chiefly used postpositively.
1. Originally Heraldry. Of two figures in a design: facing each other. Cf. affronted adj. 3, confronté adj. Now rare.
