Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: English Poggendorff.
Etymology: < the name of J. C. Poggendorff (1796–1877), German physicist and chemist. Poggendorff described this illusion in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. (1860) 110 502.
attributive. Designating or relating to (a figure illustrating) an optical illusion in which the two ends of a straight line whose central portion is obscured by a rectangular strip crossing at an angle seem not to be in line; esp. in Poggendorff figure, Poggendorff illusion.
