Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French philologue.
Etymology: < Middle French, French philologue man of letters, scholar (1534 in Rabelais), expert in linguistics and literary studies (1816) < classical Latin philologus man of letters, scholar < Hellenistic Greek ϕιλόλογος , use as noun of ancient Greek ϕιλόλογος fond of learning (see philology n.); compare -logue comb. form 1. Compare Italian filologo (1546), and also German Philologe (late 18th cent. in this form; earlier in Latinate form †philologus (1548)), the semantic development of which parallels that of the French word.Philologe occurs frequently in Ascham's Toxophilus, although it is unclear whether as a title or as the proper name of a character:1545 R. Ascham Toxophilus i. f. 2 The same man in the same place Philologe, by your leue, doth admitte holsome, honest and manerlie pastimes to be as necessarie.
Now rare (archaic in later use).
