Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin philomēla.
Etymology: < classical Latin philomēla nightingale < Philomēla , the name of the daughter of Pandion and sister of Procne, who was turned into a nightingale < ancient Greek Φιλομήλα . Compare French philomèle (1669), Spanish filomela (1598 or earlier), Portuguese filomela (1572), Italian Filomela (1475–78 or earlier), all poetic and literary. Compare earlier Philomene n.
