Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ϕιλομαθής.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕιλομαθής fond of learning < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + μάθη learning (see opsimath n.). Compare slightly later philomathematic n.It is possible that quot. 1611 might instead show a graphic abbreviation of philomathematic n.: compare quot. 1607.
Now chiefly historical.
A lover of learning; a student or scholar, esp. of mathematics, natural philosophy, etc.; (formerly) spec. †an astrologer or prognosticator (obsolete).
