Etymology: Origin unknown. Sc. National Dict. s.v. ploud n.¹ regards the sense ‘a thick-set, fat person’ recorded for the form plloud in W. Gregor Dial. Banffshire (1866) at that entry as showing a later sense development of this word; however, this seems unlikely, in view of the other senses Gregor records for this form (as noun and verb), e.g. ‘the act of walking with a waddling kind of pace’, ‘a short heavy fall’, ‘to walk with a waddling kind of pace’, ‘to fall with a heavy short fall’ (compare plout v.). Compare also Sc. National Dict. s.v. ploud n.² Scottish Gaelic plod clod is probably < Scots.

Scottish (chiefly north-eastern). Obsolete.
